Habitat thresholds for successful predation under landscape change

چکیده

Abstract Context Habitat loss and alteration affect wildlife populations worldwide. Bush encroachment alters landscapes threatens arid semi-arid grasslands, but its effects on predator–prey relationships carnivore community ecology are not well understood. Predation strategies of large predators, for example high-speed pursuits versus ambush from short distances, likely to be affected differently by bush encroachment. Objectives We assessed how affects overall predation success cheetahs ( Acinonyx jubatus ) leopards Panthera pardus in a savanna landscape under variable fractional woody cover (FWC). tested if remained relatively unchanged across gradient FWC, whether cheetah was most successful at low intermediate varied seasonally. Methods Belly scores predators were measured camera-trap images collected over 7 years north-central Namibia used index success. derived predicted belly score probabilities as function which using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-derived satellite data layer. Results Predicted leopard highest 0.27–0.34 FWC the dry season, potentially due lower prey density highly covered areas decreased catchability cover. 0.24–0.28 wet increased openness, high availability habitat margins visualising stalking prey, kleptoparasitism leopards. These results highlight optimal thresholds that favour than leopard. Conclusions The findings indicate heterogeneity is important leopards, suggesting management should focus control efforts maintain levels

Habitat fragmentation and landscape change

Broad-scale destruction and fragmentation of native vegetation is a highly visible result of human land-use throughout the world (Chapter 4). From the Atlantic Forests of South America to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, and in many other regions on Earth, much of the original vegetation now remains only as fragments amidst expanses of land committed to feeding and housing human beings. ...

Resource Depletion and Habitat Segregation by Competitors Under Predation Hazard

Individuals of different sizes in size-structured populations often differ greatly in the use of resources and/or space. Spectacular examples include shifts, within a lifetime, from carnivory to herbivory (e.g., some turtles; Clark and Gibbons 1969), or from herbivory to carnivory (e.g., some copepods; Neill and Peacock 1980), or from aquatic to terrestrial habitats (e.g., many amphibians). Man...

Modeling spatially varying landscape change points in species occurrence thresholds

Predicting species distributions at scales of regions to continents is often necessary, as largescale phenomena influence the distributions of spatially structured populations. Land use and land cover are important large-scale drivers of species distributions, and landscapes are known to create species occurrence thresholds, where small changes in a landscape characteristic results in abrupt ch...

Long-distance plant dispersal and habitat fragmentation: identifying conservation targets for spatial landscape planning under climate change

Climate change presents a potentially severe threat to biodiversity. Species will be required to disperse rapidly through fragmented landscapes in order to keep pace with the changing climate. An important challenge for conservation is therefore to manage landscapes so as to assist species in tracking the environmental conditions to which they are adapted. Here we develop a stochastic spatially...

Modeling Habitat Split: Landscape and Life History Traits Determine Amphibian Extinction Thresholds

Habitat split is a major force behind the worldwide decline of amphibian populations, causing community change in richness and species composition. In fragmented landscapes, natural remnants, the terrestrial habitat of the adults, are frequently separated from streams, the aquatic habitat of the larvae. An important question is how this landscape configuration affects population levels and if i...
